5 Things Small Business Websites Get Wrong

Confused business owner.

Most small business websites aren’t bad…They’re just unclear. And unclear costs you inquiries and customers.

As someone who looks at websites all the time, there are a few patterns I see over and over again. If you’re guilty of one of these, you’re very normal. But it’s time for you to bring your website to the next level.

1. No Clear Headline

When someone lands on your homepage, they should know within 5 seconds:

  • What you do

  • Who you help

  • Why it matters

“Welcome to our website” is not a headline. “Quality you can trust” is also not a headline. Clarity beats clever every time. If someone has to scroll to figure out what you actually do, you’ve already lost momentum.

2. Too Much Text (But Not Enough Information)

This one sounds contradictory, but it’s real. Some sites are walls of text. Others are vague and fluffy. The goal isn’t more words, it’s better words. Clear service descriptions and simple explanations. Direct messaging!

People don’t want to decode your business. They want to understand it quickly.

3. No Clear Call-to-Action

What are people supposed to do next? Call? Fill out a form? Schedule a consultation? Browse services? If you don’t guide them, they will leave as fast as they showed up.

A strong website gently leads visitors forward instead of hoping they’ll figure it out.

4. It Doesn’t Feel Like You

This ties into the “website feeling” idea.

Sometimes the branding feels:

  • Generic

  • Inconsistent

  • Outdated

  • Too corporate

  • Too playful

Your website should match the real-life experience of working with you. If someone meets you in person and the vibe feels completely different from your website, there’s a disconnect.

5. It Was Built Once… And Never Updated

Businesses evolve. Services change. Pricing shifts. Photos get outdated. Testimonials pile up. But the website stays frozen in time. Your website shouldn’t be a digital business card from 2018.

It should reflect where your business is now.

Final Thought

Most small business websites don’t need a total rebuild. They need clarity, strategy, and a little intentional design. When your website clearly explains what you do, feels aligned with your brand, and guides people confidently, inquiries start to feel easier.
